You Have Been In CORPORATE For 25 Years. What Do You Want To BE When You Grow Up?

From the time we were little kids, adults would routinely ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As kids, common answers usually included being a firefighter, policeman, nurse or maybe even as star bound as President of the United States. In many cases, the answer might even reflect whatever our parents’ profession happened to be. All of the answers are plausible at that time to a child because children have no parameters which define their lives. As we grew older, the answer to that question sometimes becomes much more simple – because the parameters defining our lives become much more complicated.

At FranNet when we pose the question of what our clients want to be, we hear exasperated but simple answers like, “I just want to be with my family more.” Or, “I want to be financially independent.” Or, “I want to be out of the Corporate Rat Race.”

So, you’ve been toiling in corporate jobs for several years.  What do you want to BE when you grow up?  This is known as looking for your “Encore Career.”

Don Evans attended one of my seminars in early 2013 approaching his 25th year in the corporate world.  He knew it was the time to look seriously at business ownership for the next phase of his career, and was hoping to find an opportunity where he didn’t have to be present day-to-day – as he wanted to continue his ministerial studies and give back to the community.

Shortly after the seminar, Evans and his wife, Geneva, visited with me for a consultation. Working together, we defined the Evans’ personal vision and they were pleasantly surprised as I introduced them to several possible franchise fits. (even some that they did not know existed).  I helped coach them through what information to look for when investigating a franchise, and even was able to provide the right additional resources to help them complete the process.

For those looking for their Encore Career, Evans suggests “Know that a business has multiple dimensions and can be stressful, so before you being your search, you need to really understand what your role is in the business and if there is something you don’t know how to do, you need to hire someone who does.  Finally, set realistic expectations, know your economics and have your financial house in order.”

Although thorough research, Evans was excited about joining a relatively young company with a competitive product and a focused mission.  Evans now owns Zounds Hearing locations in Plymouth, MI (opened June 2013) and Ann Arbor, MI (opened September 2013.)  He is currently looking to open a third location in the Novi, MI area during the 2nd quarter of 2014.  Zounds Hearing is one of the fastest growing hearing aid companies and Evans looks forward to being part of this beneficial service for many years to come.

Using a Franchise or Small Business to Diversify Your Portfolio of Investments

In this blog article, we’re going to tackle the issue of using a franchise or small business to diversify your portfolio of investments. As you’ll see, there are several advantages for doing so, the least of which is the creation of a figurative safety net. This safety net is designed to do two things:

  • To prevent the depletion of wealth in the event of a severe downturn in the economy—something we all became familiar with beginning in 2008.
  • To provide a fall-back source of income should your current job or position be eliminated.

While signs of recovery continue to aggregate, arming yourself with additional information will be a helpful exercise in diversification.

As an investor, if you have a healthy portfolio, you are always looking for ways to diversify your holdings. Owning a small business or franchise opportunity can be a smart addition which gives you the option to stay engaged in the semi-absentee model of operations while keeping your day job, so to speak. As we have covered before, the semi-absentee model allows you to run the business from afar, typically with a smooth “manage the manager” philosophy.

Through a diversification of your portfolio, you can also begin your journey into franchise ownership by purchasing it with relatively little (or no) debt. By utilizing your existing capital, you can liquidate at-risk assets for the purchase. In doing so, you have now created an additional income opportunity for yourself and a true safety net to guard against the depletion of liquidity-based wealth. We all know how wildly the stock market can fluctuate at times. And keep in mind — a business owned is a business that can one day be sold for a profit. Therein lies a true point of diversification for your portfolio.

It would be advantageous and highly recommended that you discuss such a potential move with your financial advisor, along with a highly trained franchise consultant. Both will be happy to discuss particular strategies which lessen your risk and even your tax-burden. If you are heavily vested in a 401k program, there are specific tax-free and penalty-free withdrawal options for starting a franchise such as through a ROBS (Rollover for Business Start-up) program, the 401k rollover method.

If you’ve arrived at the point of consideration of owning your own small business or franchise, perhaps it’s time for a review of your financial position in seeing just how this process can be a true diversification of your overall holdings.

Do you feel that you’re ready to get started? If this article has inspired you to investigate a franchise opportunity, there are  two different ways that you can get started:
