Current Numbers Provide a Look Toward the Future - Detroit Regional Chamber’s “State of the Region”

My last blog article focused on the Detroit Regional Chamber’s 2014 “Year in Review” and showcased what the chamber worked on in the previous year to help strengthen the Detroit region.

Now, through the Chamber’s “State of the Region” report, we can look at data that shows where the Detroit MSA currently stands.  And, based on trends, we can look toward the future.

REAL GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT 2009-2013
Data from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis from 2009 to 2013 shows that the Detroit MSA Real GDP Growth Rate was 14.0%.  In that time period, a 1-year GDP Growth Rate was never lower than 1.3%.

From 2009-2013, the National GDP Growth Rate average was 9.0% - a full five percentage points lower than Detroit’s.  In fact, the only comparable MSA to have a higher GDP Growth Rate average was Dallas (16.3%).

PRIVATE SECTOR JOB GROWTH 2009-2013
The Detroit MSA gained nearly 150,000 private sector jobs, resulting in a 9.8% job growth rate during that time period.  In comparison, the national growth rate during that time was 5.4%.

Detroit leads its comparable MSA’s in this statistic, followed by Dallas, Atlanta and Seattle.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, 2007-2014
The Detroit region is closing the gap on its unemployment rate (in comparison to the national average).  As of July 2014, the 9.4% Detroit rate is just over three percentage points from the 6.2% national rate.  The spread is the lowest it’s been since its July 2007 pre-recession level of 3.8%.

This rate includes Ann Arbor, Flint and Monroe MSA’s.

PER CAPITA INCOME GROWTH 2009-2013
Since 2009, the Detroit region has recorded a per capita income growth of 3.8%.  This ranks 6th among comparable MSA’s and outpaces the national average by 1 percentage point.

TRENDS ARE POINTING UPWARD
The Chamber’s State of the Region showcases that all economic signs for Detroit are pointing up.  You can read the full State of the Region here.

This economic recovery may beckon YOU to participate, perhaps even starting your own business.  Right NOW is that unique “ground floor” opportunity that we all hear about (often years after the fact) that begs the question, “why didn’t I jump in then?”

So, lets talk about business ownership options.  If you don’t have that million-dollar idea, you can always look into franchising!  Franchising gives you the chance to own your own business, while using another’s already proven business concept.

Enjoy my free workshop entitled “Franchising as a Career, an Investment, or Both!” on February 12 in Troy, MI.  Find out more about entrepreneurship, franchising, and how FranNet’s no-cost, no obligation consulting can help you find a business concept that was meant for you, your lifestyle and your goals.  Click here to find out more information or to register for this workshop.

To the right of the screen, take note of the other upcoming free events and webinars that you can participate in.  You can also contact me at 313-821-5060 or mcory@frannet.com with any questions you might have.

The future looks bright as the Detroit region is regaining its prominence.  You can be part of the success by starting a franchised business in the area today.
